For the answer, we will look to Scripture.

What Is Your Priority?

Colossians 1:28–29 is the passage I turn to when I talk to grandparents about spiritual growth: “Him [Jesus] we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”

Here are a few key points from Colossians 1:28–29:

Paul’s single-minded focus is Christlike maturity. While this passage does not speak directly to grandparenting, it speaks to the priorities of all Christians, including grandparents.

Paul provides three methods to help individuals mature spiritually: Gospel-proclamation, warning, and biblical teaching.

Spiritual growth requires significant effort. Paul’s exact language of “toil” and “struggling” conveys this. Paul reminds us in verse 29 that it takes work to mature in Christ. The second half of this verse tells us that spiritual growth is not a result of willpower, but God’s power working to transform us into the likeness of Jesus.
